Essential oil or fragrance oil?

Essential oils are plant extracts, such as lavender, eucalyptus or orange. They are popular for aromatherapy at home and are usually used a few drops at a time in an ultrasonic diffuser.

Fragrance oils are blended scents. They offer a much wider range (oud, musk, white tea, florals, citrus) and smell the same from bottle to bottle, which is why hotels, malls and shops use them for a signature scent.

How to size a diffuser for your space

Coverage is given either as floor area (m²) or as air volume (m³). To turn floor area into volume, multiply it by the ceiling height: a 40 m² living room with a 3 m ceiling is 120 m³.

How to refill a cold-air diffuser

Switch the machine off.
Open the oil bottle. On the ASH series, press the unlock button four times quickly and lift the atomising head.
Pour in the diffuser oil as supplied. Do not add water.
Close the bottle firmly and switch the machine back on.
Set the working hours and intensity on the panel or in the app. Start low and increase it if the scent is too light.

How long does a bottle of diffuser oil last?

It depends on the intensity setting and how many hours a day the machine runs. The ASH 200, for example, uses between 0.13 g and 2.5 g of oil an hour, so the same bottle can last a few days on full power or several weeks on a low setting. Businesses that run diffusers every day often choose an AMC scent plan, which includes the machine, regular oil refills and technical support.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put essential oil in any diffuser?

No. Ultrasonic diffusers are made for water plus a few drops of essential oil. Waterless cold-air diffusers need an oil made for nebulising; thick or resin-heavy oils can clog the atomising head. If you'd like to use another oil in a Scentivo machine, ask us first.

Do diffuser oils need water?

Not in a cold-air diffuser. You pour the oil straight into the bottle. Water is only used in ultrasonic diffusers.

How much essential oil goes in an ultrasonic diffuser?

Follow the maker's guide. Most suggest a few drops per 100 ml of water.

What is the difference between an aroma diffuser and a scent diffuser machine?

The terms are often used for the same thing. "Scent diffuser machine" usually means a cold-air diffuser built to scent a large room or a whole building, while "aroma diffuser" also covers small ultrasonic and reed diffusers.

Is a diffuser safe around children and pets?

Keep the diffuser out of reach, run it in a ventilated room and start on a low setting. Some animals are sensitive to strong scents, so ask your vet if you are unsure.
